Apple released three new models of the iPhone yesterday—the iPhone XS, the iPhone XS Max and the iPhone XR—and as with all Apple releases, there were a number of exciting advancements unveiled. From the largest display ever on an iPhone to an incredible new camera, here are five reasons you may want to grab the newest iPhone before taking off on your next adventure.
The Larger-Than-Life Display
If you travel frequently, you know the feeling of finding yourself on a plane, train or bus looking for a way to pass the time. Fortunately, the iPhone’s exceptional new screen will keep you entertained your entire trip. The iPhone XS screen is the 5.8″ super retina display familiar to iPhone X users, while the XR sits at 6.1” and the XS Max boasts a whopping 6.5”, the largest ever on an iPhone. Since the new screens run the full width and height of the phone, this new family of iPhones doesn’t really feel any bigger than what you’re used to. They just offer a whole lot more per square inch.
The Improved Battery Life
A phone is only as good as its battery, and the new iPhone is no different. The XS lasts 30 minutes longer per charge than last year’s iPhone X, while the XS Max lasts up to 90 minutes longer per charge. These aren’t groundbreaking improvements as far as battery life goes, but they’re still impressive given how much power the new screens are going to take to run.
The Water Resistance And Durability
Durability is especially important when you’re on the road, so you’ll be happy to know that the new iPhones are fitted with what Apple is calling the “most durable glass ever in a smartphone.” They’re also protected to IP68, an industry measure that simply means they’re resilient enough to resist dust and water to a depth of 2 meters (6.6 feet) for up to 30 minutes. What’s perhaps more relevant, though, is that they’re also resistant to spills of coffee, soda, beer and other beverages, making the new iPhone more life-proof than ever before. While I don’t recommend testing these metrics too liberally—liquid damage isn’t covered under the standard Apple warranty—this does mean that your new iPhone should be fine the next time you accidentally spill your drink.
The Remarkable New Camera
The XS and XS Max have the same core photography setup: a 12 MP wide camera, a 12 MP telephoto camera and Apple’s renowned True Tone flash. The software is equally impressive: smart HDR offers improved shadow and highlight detail, depth control allows post-capture depth of field adjustments and enhanced portrait mode makes selfies even sharper. All three models shoot video in 4K, the highest video quality of any smartphone in the world. Face detection, facial landmarking and depth mapping are just a few of the many operations running behind the scenes to make your photos instantly better.
The (Almost) Dual-SIM Technology
If you cross borders often, dual-SIM technology—which allows you to hold two SIM cards in your phone at the same time—is a must-have. It’s a perk that comes standard on many other smartphones today, since it eliminates the need to remove and reinsert a SIM card every time you travel and also allows you to have two distinct phone numbers running on the same phone. Apple has resisted dual-SIM technology from day one, but the new iPhone finally takes a step in the right direction. The newest models now have one removable SIM slot and one eSIM, a virtual SIM card that gives you some, but not all, of the benefits of a second removable SIM. If you live in China, Hong Kong or Macau, though, you’re in luck: your iPhone will come with the real dual-SIM tech we all crave.
You can pre-order your iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max beginning tomorrow, September 14th, starting at $999 and $1,099 respectively. Pre-orders of the iPhone XR begin on October 19th and start at $749. Apple will begin deliveries on all three phones one week after their pre-order date.
